After two years of the Lord's dealing with him about starting a new Independent Baptist Church in the Black Hills, Pastor WIlliams came to Rapid City in August of 1979. In his motel room prayed for three things:
1) A place to preach
2) Someone to preach to
3) A place to move his family.
One phone call was made from the motel room which brought those three things to reality.
The first service was on November 15, 1979, with less than 20 people present. New Year's Day, 1980, 33 people signed the Charter to organize the new Church named LIBERTY BAPTIST TABERNACLE.
The Church met at 232 E. Adams Street, assuming the debt balance for that building which was around $2,000.00. The Church out grew the building on East Adams in less than two years, and had to relocate, so the Church voted to sell
the East Adams property. It was sold for $60,000.00. The property at 1515 Space Avenue was bought in 1982 for $200,000.00.
July 1, 1990, the debt on that property was paid in full! How much the Lord had blessed! Liberty Baptist Tabernacle is still debt-free, and will continue to operate that way.
The Church always had a Sunday School, and the Day School ministry of Liberty Baptist Academy opened in September of 1980 with 24 students. From the beginning the Old Liberty Radio Broadcast on KVSR FM (now KLMP) was a part
of the Church's outreach. That ministry was discontinued toward the end of 1996. Church planting has been a burden of the pastor, and Liberty Baptist Tabernacle has helped start serveral new Churches in the west.
Liberty Baptist Tabernacle has supported missionaries from it's earliest days.
In the year 1987, with the 8th Anniversary Days in November, having been motivated by Brother Dennis Deneau, Liberty began it's ministry of Scripture production and distribution called Bearing Precious Seed.
William Byers and his wife Ginny were on the road as BPS missionaries.
Brother Tom Furse joined the staff as Associate Pastor in the early part of 1999. He has been associated with Liberty for about 19 years.
